England v Costa Rica World Cup Group Game Preview
So we reach the final group game of what has been a crushingly disappointing World Cup for England fans. Woy’s boys have been beaten in their two opening group games against Italy and Uruguay, entering into the game with Costa Rica with only pride to play for. Costa Rica currently top the group and only need another point to hold onto that position.
The England team has already been widely published for this game, with Hodgson naming many of the younger squad players who haven’t yet had a game – such players as Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Ross Barkley, Ben Foster and Frank Lampard all expected to start. With such wholesale changes England might again struggle for rhythm and to put it all together as a team, though many feel that things couldn’t get much worse than the two performances we have already seen.
Costa Rica are also expected to rest a few players, with qualification in the bag they can win the group with a draw or even if they get beat so long as there isn’t a three goal swing in goal difference. With this in mind, it could be the ideal chance for England to salvage some pride and get a win, but with all those young players it could still be a tricky test. So how are the bookies seeing things?
Costa Rica 4/1
So there you have it, after two dismal opening matches, England are still the slight odds-on favourites for the match, probably due to the news that Costa Rica are going to rest a few players. The bookies are clearly showing great confidence in the next generation of English players, however we’re not so sure.
Probably the value bet here is the draw, at 16/5 it suits Costa Rica who will get the top spot and it suits England who will at least come away from the tournament with something. England have nothing to lose which does mean they might be more attacking, but a back line including so many inexperienced players at this level will surely come under some fire of their own at some point.
In terms of total goals, it could well be fairly open, England aren’t going to sit back and let Costa Rica cruise to a 0-0 draw, so there could be some goals to be had, it might be worth a bet on +2.5 goals at just under Evens with 888Sport.
We wouldn’t like to bet too much on England correct scores but if you do fancy England to maybe get a final win then probably the best bet would be England to win 2-1 at odds of 9/1 with Totesport.
Tonight will give us a glimpse of what the future of England may hold, the first XI did not have the correct balance or teamwork to hold off Italy and Uruguay, so expectations will still be fairly low for tonight’s game.
