Manchester City v Chelsea Premier League Betting Tips & Preview
A huge game in the race for the Premier League title takes place this Sunday afternoon as table toppers Chelsea travel to the Etihad Stadium to face off against reigning champions Manchester City. Both sides suffered disappointing results in their opening Champions League matches on Wednesday night, City going to 1-0 away to Bayern Munich, while Chelsea could only secure a 1-1 at home against another German side in Schalke.
Chelsea have started the current campaign better than their opponents here, and Jose Mourinho’s men have a maximum twelve points from their four games played thus far. City are back in fifth position, five points behind their main title rivals but Manuel Pellegrini’s side have had arguably the tougher run of games to this point.
Man City v Chelsea Outright Match Betting Odds
Manchester City 6/4
Paddy Power make Manchester City their 6/4 favourite to win the game, with Chelsea on offer at odds of 9/5. The draw can be backed at the 23/10 mark with the Irish firm. It isn’t very often that we see Manchester City at odds against when playing on home soil, and this may well be the biggest price they will be all season in the Premier League at the Etihad.
Manchester City’s record at home is second to none, and that is why their recent defeat at the hands of Stoke City was so shocking. Having won their first two Premier League games of the season with relative ease, I think we all expected another three points on the board for the current Premier League champions when they took on Mark Hughes’ Stoke side three weeks ago. That wasn’t to be however and the 1-0 reverse is one of the reasons why Chelsea have stolen a march at the top of the table.
The pressure is really on City to win here as they are the side doing the chasing. That being said, this team has proven just how good they are when the pressure is on over the last few seasons and City may well be able to make home advantage tell this time around.
Manchester City were unlucky not to come away with a draw in midweek against Bayern, going down to a late goal from one of their former players Jerome Boateng. City can definitely take some positive from that match however and the players shouldn’t be downbeat coming into this clash with Chelsea.
Jose Mourinho’s big money signings have really hit the ground running and as a result, his Chelsea side sit two points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Victories over Burnley, Leicester, Everton and Swansea have seen the blues score fifteen goals, but this game against Manchester City is likely to be the first occasion on which they have been truly tested so far this season.
Mourinho is a master when it comes to the matches against key rivals but this clash will be sure to test his skills to their limit. Cesc Fabregas has been simply outstanding since his arrival at the Bridge from Barcelona and the Spaniard looks set to play a crucial role in the match on Sunday. It will also be interesting to see if Frank Lampard lines up against his former club, and that would definitely add further spice to the game.
Looking at the both teams to score market, the yes option is available at a best price of 7/10 with Ladbrokes and appears to be the most likely outcome, particularly when you couple Chelsea’s free scoring form with Manchester City’s home record. The best price on at least one of these teams failing to find the back of the net is the 13/10 available at Coral.
It will come as little surprise that Diego Costa heads the first goalscorer betting odds, with the Chelsea hitman having been put in at odds of 5/1 with Paddy Power. As far as City are concerned, Sergio Aguero has also been put in at the 5/1 mark at the same firm.
Last time out aside, Manchester City are outstanding when playing on home soil. 6/4 is a massive price when you take the last few years into consideration and I’ll be backing them on Sunday to end Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season.
