England v Slovenia Euro 2016 Qualifier Preview & Betting Tips

England take on Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday 15th November, with the match being shown live on ITV1 in the UK.  The match is a fairly important one in the group, as it brings together top of the group England and second-placed Slovenia.

England v Slovenia Euro 2016 Qualifier

England have had a solid start to their campaign with three wins on the bounce, though it needed a 73rd minute Wayne Rooney goal to finally break the resistance of 10-man Estonia in their last game.  That hinted at some of the problems England still have since their disappointing World Cup showing, as they really struggled for creativity against the resolute Estonia.

Slovenia are no mugs, with their wins over Switzerland and Lithuania in the last two qualifiers showing they can be contenders in this group.  They missed out on qualification for the last world cup, but have a number of solid, decent players at clubs around Europe and have a great team spirit.  England will be the favourites of course, but could find them a tough nut to crack at Wembley on Saturday.

England vs Slovenia Outright Odds

England 1/3 (Paddy Power)

Draw 4/1 (Bet365)

Slovenia 11/1 (Ladbrokes)

The outright odds make England clear odds-on favourites with Slovenia available at 11/1 with Ladbrokes.  This is a pretty huge price really.  I don’t particularly fancy an upset at this moment in time, but I’m not very keen to be backing a fairly average looking England team at odds of 1/3, so I will be avoiding the outright market.

England v Slovenia First Goalscorer

I fancy Wayne Rooney to score first and he’s available at 10/3 with Bet365.  Rooney is a master at scoring in the qualifiers and seems to have raised his game a bit since being given the added responsibility of being captain of the team.  He is the one England player who has that bit of extra class to do something out of the ordinary, as proven by his free kick winner against Estonia.

Wayne Rooney England v Estonia Free Kick

Get Rooney at 10/3 to score first like he did in Estonia

Other players who take the eye include Danny Welbeck at 4/1 who’s had a good start to life at Arsenal and now getting a run in his preferred position of central striker.  Another Arsenal man, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain takes the eye at 10/1 with Ladbrokes – he’s been in good form for Arsenal recently and got himself a couple of goals and finally seems to be shaking off his injury worries.  He has the kind of pace and direct running ability to unlock defences so looks a decent shout at that 10/1.

Slovenia are quite restricted for options up front, but their main man for goals is Milivoje Novakovic, a 35 year old who now plies his trade in the J-League in Japan.  He does still know where the goal is however and has all 3 of Slovenia’s goals so far in qualification, if you fancy Slovenia to score first then he is the best bet at a good price of 14/1 with Paddy Power.

Correct Score

I don’t fancy that this will be any sort of goalfest, both teams are fairly solid defensively at this level and the main thing England probably have to worry about is running out of ideas and creativity like they seemed to do against ten-man Estonia.  I think 1-0 and 2-0 to England are very possible scorelines and both these scores can be got at general quotes of 9/2.

If you fancy Slovenia to put up some stubborn resistance and hold out for a 0-0 draw then you can get that score at 10/1 with Bet365 and if you fancy Slovenia to nick it 1-0 then you can get them at a massive 28/1 with Coral.

Recommended Bets

Overall it doesn’t look like the most exciting match, England have been drawn an easy looking qualification group and should sail through the group.  However an overall lack of creativity and finishers could see them struggle occasionally for goals.  My recommended bets are as follows:

England to win 2-0 @ 9/2 (Various Bookies)

Wayne Rooney 1st Goalscorer @ 10/3 (Bet365)

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 1st Goalscorer @ 10/1 (Ladbrokes)
